Painting

Spanish Period (1990s-2000s)

In 1986, Herman and Vera moved to Spain with their three daughters. During this time, Herman was a member of the Art in Nature movement, creating site-specific, ephemeral installations in the landscape, as well as developing his own approach to environmental art, Terranova. His painting from this period remained figurative, but moved away from the overtly sociopolitical to focus on more intimate and poetic explorations of human beings and how they relate to themselves, each other, and the world around them.
