Jetzt sind einige Monate vergangen seit Ali und ich im Mai in Deutschland für die Eröffnungen der Ausstellungen auf Rheinelbe und Sylt waren. Es war eine schöne Reise und es hat gut getan, zu sehen, wie viele bemerkenswerte Menschen sich so liebevoll und begeistert für Hermans Arbeit engagieren.
Dieter Ronte, Peter Köddermann und seine Mitarbeiter beim M:AI und Renate Späth, in Zusammenarbeit mit den wunderbaren Förstern, die sich täglich um den Rheinelbe Skulpturenwald kümmern und der RVR, die den Park jetzt verwaltet, haben eine schöne Ausstellung gestaltet und realisiert. Sie führt einen durch Hermans Gedankenwelt, von den ersten Entwürfen und Skizzen zu den endgültigen Zeichnungen und technischen Plänen, und seiner Kommunikation mit Mitarbeitern und der Gemeinde, dargestellt durch Korrespondenz und Videomaterial, und erzählt die Entstehungsgeschichte des Skulpturenwaldes auf kreative, intelligente und humorvolle Weise. Danach geht man hinaus in den Park, spaziert zwischen den Kunstwerken und sieht sie von einer ganz neuen Perspektive. Ausserdem stellt die Ausstellung zum ersten Mal eine Verbindung da zwischen Hermans Landschaftskunst und seiner Grafik und Malerei. Zusammen mit Ramona Dreessen, haben Dieter Ronte und Peter Köddermann einige Arbeiten ausgesucht und sie mit in die Werkschau integriert. Auch einige Arbeiten von Hermans letztem Projekt, eine Kollagen-Serie für das Buch Herzschlag einer Weltmacht (Pforte Verlag, 2009) von Kai Ehlers sind in der Ausstellung zu sehen. Die Werkschau läuft noch bis Ende September; die Finissage findet am 26. September statt.
Ramona Dreessen hat im Kaamp-Hüs auf Sylt eine witzige und reizvolle Ausstellungen organisiert mit schönen Arbeiten mehrerer Künstler. Das Thema – Erotik, ein Thema mit dem wir Menschen uns endlos beschäftigen können. Zeitlos und höchst individuell – die Erotik versteht jeder auf ganz eigene Art. Darin lag auch das interessante an der Ausstellung Erotic Island – 5 Künstler, 5 ganz unterschiedliche Interpretationen und Gedanken zum Thema. Zu sehen gab es Zeichnungen von Jo Gesing, Malerei von Sabine Jesse-Kniesel, Fotografie von Olaf Krönke und Jan de Wit und einige wunderschöne Arbeiten von Herman, hauptsächlich Bilder aus einer Serie, die er in den 90ziger Jahren auf Mallorca gemalt hatte. Bunte, vibrierende Figuren im ekstatischen Tanz, mit starken Pigmenten, Sand und anderen ungewöhnlichen Materialien realisiert.
Several months have gone by since Ali and I went to Germany in May to the inaugurations of the exhibitions in Rheinelbe (Gelsenkirchen/Ruhr Valley) and on Sylt. It was a beautiful trip. What I found particularly moving was how many remarkable people care for Herman’s work, investing so much time, effort and enthusiasm into keeping it alive. Dieter Ronte, Peter Köddermann and his colleagues at the M:AI, and Renate Späth put together a beautiful exhibition in collaboration with the incredible forest rangers that take care of the sculptural park every day, and the RVR, which now manages the park. It takes you into Herman’s imagination, his thought processes, from the earliest notes and sketches to final ink and technical drawings. The exhibition design also builds a narrative thread using correspondence and video that explores Herman’s relationships and his exchange with collaborators and the local community. The result is a fascinating look at the story behind the creation of the sculptural park, told in an intelligent, creative and often witty way. After seeing the exhibition, a walk through the park, amongst the many artworks, takes on a completely new and surprising perspective. Furthermore, the exhibition is the first to establish a connection between Herman’s work in the landscape and his graphic work and paintings. Along with Ramona Dreessen, Dieter Ronte and Peter Köddermann selected several works, which they integrated into the exhibition. Furthermore, a few pieces from Herman’s last project, a series of collages for the book Herzschlag einer Weltmacht (Pforte Verlag, 2009) by Kai Ehlers are also on display. The exhibition runs until late September. The closing event will take place on September 26th, 2010.
At the Kaamp-Hüs on Sylt, Ramona Dreessen organised a light-hearted and charming group show with works by several artists. The theme was eroticism, a topic all of us humans find endlessly fascinating. It is timeless and highly individual – eroticism is something everyone has a different take on. This is precisely what made the show Erotic Island interesting – 5 artists, 5 completely different ways of understanding and interpreting the theme. The show included drawings by Jo Gesing, paintings by Sabine Jesse-Kniesel, photography by Olaf Krönke and Jan de Wit and several incredible paintings by Herman. Most of them belong to a series that he painted in the early 90s on Mallorca. They are vibrant, colorful figures caught up in ecstatic dance and powerful, vivid images of human interaction realized in strong pigments, sand and other unusual materials.

Han pasado varios meses desde que Ali y yo fuimos a Alemania en mayo para asistir a las inauguraciones de las exposiciones en Rheinelbe (Gelsenkirchen / Valle del Ruhr) y en Sylt. Fue un viaje precioso. Lo que me pareció especialmente emotivo fue la cantidad de personas extraordinarias que cuidan el trabajo de Herman, invirtiendo tanto tiempo, esfuerzo y entusiasmo para mantenerlo vivo. Dieter Ronte, Peter Köddermann y sus compañeros en la M:AI y Renate Späth juntaron una exposición hermosa en colaboración con los increíbles guardas forestales que cuidan a diario el parque escultural, y la RVR, que ahora administra el parque. Te lleva a la imaginación de Herman, a sus procesos de pensamiento, desde las más tempranas anotaciones y esbozos, hasta los últimos dibujos técnicos, y de tinta. La mayoría pertenecen a una serie que pintó a principios de los 90 en Mallorca. Son figuras vibrantes y coloridas inmersas en bailes extáticos e imágenes intensas y vivas de la interacción humana, hechas con fuertes pigmentos, arena y otros materiales poco comunes.
